“Can a Human Being Become an Animal?” May 22, 2018

“These aren’t people. They are animals.”

President Donald Trump in a conversation about

MS-13 gangs.

Recently, a man in Odisha, India spotted an injured bear on the side of the road. Sufficiently intrigued, he went over to check it out. Then he thought it would be clever to take a “selfie” next to the bear. Then the bear seized him by the neck and tore him to pieces. Leaving him thoroughly dead. Bears do that because they are bears.

Twenty-three centuries ago, Aristotle offered four questions to use when trying to discern what an object or a person really is. One principle was that the question is easily answered by simply asking what the thing or person “does.” A statue is a statue because it is made of mortar or marble and it stands still as a display. A person who sings all day is a singer. A person who paints for a living is a painter. An animal who kills without moral considerations is an animal. I sense that Aristotle would say an MS-13 member who kills like an animal is…an animal.

The gang members of MS-13 have outdone the most vile and grotesque criminals ever. They rape and murder and dismember across the globe. Yet, when the President called them animals, the pushback came down immediately by “elite” thinkers in the media. Some of these same people regularly refer to pro-lifers as “misogynists” who hate women. Many of them insist that opposing gay marriage makes one a “bigot.” One even insisted that those who hold to conservative moral values are “deplorable.” They use such descriptions freely.

They call out opprobrium daily. Yet, now they pop their moral buttons saying that they are offended…stunned…that anyone would call another person an animal. Suddenly they are sensitive and want to “speak nice” about their neighbors. Even the worst killers. If this was not tragic it would be funny.

In any case…perhaps the real question for us as Christians is this: “Can a human being become so morally depraved that they cast off the image of God with which they were created and become virtually animals in human form?” Of course. Even the Word of God tells us that is true. In Psalm 73, the writer reflects upon a time in his life when he had turned away from God in a period of bitterness and complaints. He says, “I was a brute beast before you!” (Psalm 73:22).

God allowed Nebuchadnezzar to literally become an animal. His humanity was taken away because of his wicked deeds. We read:

Daniel 4:33 (NIV) “Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like cattle. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.”

When evil and Godlessness take over the soul, God allows that person to have no more conscience than a bear. In fact, it is almost insulting to the animals to say such people are animals. Why? Because animals do what is God-given in their nature. Animal-like people have degenerated and taken on a new nature. One filled with evil.

Twenty-three-year-old Joel Martinez is an MS-13 gang member in Massachusetts. On September 20, 2015 he murdered a fifteen-year-old boy named Irvin Castro. Martinez admitted in court that he had stabbed the young man repeatedly as he begged for his life. He then bragged about it to all who came to see the mangled body. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

One other thing…when asked what his personal name was, as a gang member, he smiled and said “Animal!” Think about that.

Matthew 5:4 (NIV) “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

    Amen and Amen. Absolutely right!

You retired to early. You have so many sermons unsaid it seems. I suppose a blog is your pulpit now. Blessings from the Stover’s.

Thank you. It’s sad watching President Trump’s haters exposing themselves as the godless people they are. When we hear political leaders speak of these animals as having a “spark of divinity” while promoting full term murder of babies you know our society has fallen so far. They are a den of vipers. Come Lord Jesus

  4. Thank you Pastor Alberta. Enjoy reading your blogs.

  5. Pr. Alberta,
Right on! Helpful Biblical perspective on this topic that has generated so much obfuscation in the press and on the airwaves.
    Blessings … Bill

  6. Spot on Pastor Alberta. I read the same sickening news everyday as well. It does seem to get worse, as if we are sliding further into the end, and judgement.
I agree with President Trump and pray for Gods continuing protection and guidance for him.
Thank you again for your thoughts on this blog.

Aristotle would probably have identified me as a contrarian; always looking for something to disagree with. I can’t find anything here or in your prior posts that fits. And, I agree with Jim’s comment above. I look forward to reading your blog every bit as much as I looked forward to your Sunday sermons. Keep ’em coming.

Thank you for your posts you are right about about these gang members, reality is , they refuse God.
Some people can’t accept reality., like the bear hugger. However in this case the media complains because Trump said it. They know these people are animals. They would complain (with a headline) “Trump is responsible for oncologist being layed off” ? If Trump cured cancer.

    Blessed are the peacekeepers
